In the world we live in today, there are endless variations of clothes. Everyone has their own taste and how they like to express themselves. The entire range of any outfit style ultimately has fundamentals (your foundation/building blocks if you will) at its core and on today's feature we'll be letting you in on what these fundamentals are. Guaranteed by the end of this, you'll never miss when composing your outfits no matter what your style is! (Disclaimer: All outfits below are geared towards winter season since winter is almost here AND for the first time both men and women can find inspiration from the blog)

Think of your outfit as a jigsaw puzzle...

The outfit puzzle is fairly easy, it has puzzle blocks which can easily create a disasterpiece if they're randomly assembled or can create a masterpiece when the right pieces link up. Keep on reading to get the keys to creating your masterpiece

1.FIT

Fit is essentially the way your clothes fit on your body and isn't related to the shape of your clothes. In other words, your clothes shouldn't be too small or too large. You have the freedom to wear whatever shape you desire, but ultimately fit is to do with your body shape(CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT WHAT CLOTHES SUIT YOUR BODY TYPE). Example, your pants should sit comfortably around your waist without needing a belt

and your shirt shouldn't be bigger than your whole body

UNLESS the design is intended to be oversized. DDB fam there is a fine line that separates intentionally oversized clothing and clothing that's just too big. The key areas to look for the perfect fit are the waist, shoulders and thighs. So in the words of J. Cole, "choose wisely"

2.COLOUR

Okay so you have the perfect fit, but your colour coordination is all over the place. Keep in mind that in most cases LESS IS MORE. This is clear to see on almost every fashion Instagrammers page or every other fashion blog including DDB. This statement holds true because it's literally impossible to miss with neutral tones however also take your skin tone into major consideration when deciding what neutrals to wear so you don't camouflage yourself into your own clothes. "Okay cool, but I wanna experiment sometimes, what now?" The best way to initiate experimentation is by sticking to a 3 colour max in your outfit with one of the colours being bright/different and having 2 neutrals to tone down the intensity.

This doesn't mean you have to listen to what I say, you can experiment with more than 3 colours

to understand colours more look out for the next blog on COLOUR THEORY. "Bro, but you've BEEN going on about neutrals that time we have no clue what they are". Okay okay relax, your neutral colours are generally your blacks, greys, whites, navies, creams and beiges.

3.TEXTURE

Here we have the work horse of the team, who never gets any real recognition compared to your star players, but without him your team (outfit) can go from a multiple trophy winner to just a single league title. Texture is something that requires effort that might seem unnecessary, but when in public will create a greater appreciation up close rather than from a distance. Different textures create different vibes and we don't really care for anything else but the VARBS BRU. Example, during winter we want an outfit that gives off a warm vibe but that's not a complete overkill. You can achieve this by combing a fleece jacket, with corduroy or wool pants and soft leather shoes.

This is perfect because these textures are the definition of winter and although, you could pull the same outfit off with different materials, you'll be lacking on the winter vibes and WE'RE ALL HERE FOR THE VARBS BRU. Try not to wear the same texture throughout your outfit as bonus tip, unless your goal is to look like a wannabe superhero in costume (unfortunately we're not in the marvel universe my friends). On the other extreme you could wear an outfit with no visible texture at all, giving off a vibe of elegance, for example, a semi formal look.

4.SILHOUETTE

You might be thinking that silhouette and fit are the same thing, but the difference lies in the fact that silhouette refers to the entire outfit in terms of the shape of the clothing pieces you put together. Still confused? For further context, you could be creating a "top-heavy" silhouette where everything above the waistline is oversized and you have a slim silhouette below your waist that's made by wearing skinny jeans and slim shoes,

or your goal's to make a relaxed fit that has some structure by wearing sharp press-creased trousers,

or you could be going for an essential fit by wearing tailored trousers with a slim fit t-shirt.

5.ACCESSORIES

I think someone needs to call 10111 on DDB because surely mentioning accessories on EVERY article is a crime.

While I wait for the cops to come arrest me, let me talk to you about my favourite fundamental of all time... ACCESSORIES! As I've said many times in past blog posts you don't have to go overboard. You can literally just wear a watch and it'll transform your outfit attention dramatically. Here's a very basic jeans and t-shirt outfit without a watch

and this is the outfit with a watch.

The difference is subtle (besides the change in silhouette and person) but another dimension is created on the outfit and people have more to look at rather than just jeans and a t-shirt. For all my four-eyed friends out there (as of January 2020 including me, as seen below)

you can use your glasses as an additional accessory by switching up your frames to match your outfits, of course only if it's affordable to buy another frame.

You can alternatively add rings, a bracelet, a chain or headwear respectively.

6.FUNCTION

"Bro, I have 5 of the 6 key fundamentals to never miss with an outfit, so why do I need to know about function?" This fundamental is the most important because if your clothes don't match your environment then you're setting yourself up for a very uncomfortable day. With function, we talk about the type of setting you're in on a regular basis. Are you at work in an office all week

or are you in class?

Whatever your answer is you have to dress appropriately for that setting. Example, if you're in corporate you don't wanna show up to work in jeans and a t-shirt and the same applies with wearing a 3 piece suit on campus for the whole day, you just don't wanna do it. The function also relates to the climate you live in i. e. Is it generally hot or cold? Ask yourself these questions when you have the other 5 fundamentals down so that you never miss with whatever outfit you put together.

Again, here at DDB, all our articles serve as a guideline so mix and match whatever you want, but always keep your fundamentals in mind when developing your style.

The only things that are left are for you to go and experiment. The more you do this, the quicker you'll be able to see what you're comfortable with and can rock any outfit possible with minimal effort. See you on the next feature!
